Dr. Arshad Husain is a Professor of Child Psychiatry and Child Health as
well as Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
As the founder of the International Psychosocial Trauma Center at MU, Husain
and his trauma teams have made numerous trips to war-torn regions, including
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Pakistan, Chechnya, Palestine, and Jordan, to train
teachers and mental health professionals to help children deal with the
trauma and tragedy associated with war. In early 2005 he worked in the
regions of South and Southeast Asia that were devastated by the massive
tsunami. He also conducts annual workshops in Missouri as well as abroad
for health professionals, nurses, and teachers.
Dr. Husain has published more than 65 papers in noted medical journals,
scientific proceedings, and book reviews on adolescent psychiatry and on
psychiatric education and teaching. In addition to five professional books
on various aspects of child psychopathology, he is the author of Hope
for Children: Lessons from Bosnia (International Medical and Educational
Trust, 2001). For his work, Husain has been awarded the Bruno Lima Award
by the American Psychiatric Association for outstanding contributions to
disaster psychiatry. He also has been awarded the most coveted Irving Philips
Memorial Award by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
for a lifetime of contributions to the prevention of mental illness in
children and adolescents and the American Medical Association's Pride in
the Profession Award.
