Taking Faith Seriously
July 15, 2007 - Religious ignorance is widespread and
dangerous, according to a group of scholars who met in Baltimore, Md., in
July to discuss "Inquiry and Action: Teaching and Learning in a Religiously
Pluralistic World."
About 150 people from around the country participated in the
workshop, including Amy White, outreach coordinator for MU's Center on Religion & the
Professions.
One of the issues discussed was religious literacy, the fact
that most people not only do not know about other religions but often know
little about their own. Scholars also discussed issues of academic freedom,
the academy's fundamental values, recognizing religious orientation and background
among faculty and students, and students' spiritual needs in an educational
setting.
The workshop, held at the College of Notre Dame, was sponsored
by the Society for Values in Higher Education, an interdisciplinary fellowship
of educators and professionals. White will serve on the society's Strategic
Planning committee for 2007-08.
