Workshop: "Responding to the Church Crisis"

April 30, 2009 by Debra Mason

News reports of shootings and assaults at houses of worship spotlight the need for ministries to prepare for such crises. This 8-hour course is the first in a series of courses designed for pastoral leaders and those responsible for safety and security in a church environment. The course provides a comprehensive overview of the important steps in planning for a church crisis, reducing vulnerabilities, mitigating a crisis, and dealing with the aftermath of a crisis. A historical perspective of church violence over the last decade will illustrate the importance of preparing a ministry for a risk-effective crisis response.

Brownbag: Evolution vs. intelligent design filmmaker Randy Olson

March 10, 2009 by Debra Mason

Randy Olson, filmmaker & marine biologist

Filmmaker and former biologist Dr. Randy Olson’s documentary film (84 minutes) probes the great communications struggle around evolution vs. intelligent design being waged in today’s mainstream media. Olson’s humorous, enlightening and sometimes sobering journey includes in-depth interviews with top experts on intelligent design, school board members, and lawyers, and footage from an evening with evolutionists who gather for a game of poker and evolution debate.

THURSDAY, March 12, 2009 – NOON
TUCKER FORUM – 85 GANNETT HALL
Missouri School of Journalism

Randy Olson got his Ph.D. from Harvard University in ecology, but has become a well-known film maker of both serious interviews with a wide variety of scientists and fishermen and a series of humorous film shorts that are educational and irreverent. He is a lecturer at the University of Southern California and leads an organization known as Shifting Baselines, that educates the public about the tremendous changes in natural communities that have occurred, to an extent that current generations cannot understand just how biologically rich the world was just a few generations ago.

Lecture: "Embracing the Other: Foundation of Interfaith & Intercultural Dialogue"

March 10, 2009 by Debra Mason

Lecture by Rihab Sawah, associate professor, Moberly Area Community College

This event is organized by the University of Missouri Dialogue Club (MUDC). MUDC is an MU-recognized student organization established with the goal of promoting dialogue, tolerance, and understanding among students of diverse faiths and cultures. For more information, see http://students.missouri.edu/~mudc/.

March 11, 2009 – 6:30 PM
S016 South Memorial Union
University of Missouri

Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served.

The presentation will highlight, through examples, the importance of interfaith and intercultural dialogue in bridging the gap that exists when we focus on differences. It will demonstrate how our actions could translate into an embracing of each other on the day-to-day level, regardless of those apparent differences.

Lecturer’s bio:
Sawah is associate professor of physics at Moberly Area Community College and she chairs its Global Education Committee. In the summer of 2007, she was the coordinator for a Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad to Syria, which was to provide the participants with an experiential exposure to religious pluralism in Syria. The program included meeting the world’s first Syriac Patriarch, the Grand Mufti of Syria, the leaders of the Syrian-Jewish community in Damascus, and visits to several ancient Muslim, Christian, and Jewish holy sites.

Sawah has been presenting on Religious Pluralism in Syria, as well as other topics, at national conferences such as the MidWest Institute for International and Intercultural Education, in addition to many college campuses and civic institutions around the country.
