F. Wendall Miller distinguished Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Iowa will give a speech Friday, March 5th, entitled: “God and Google”.
Both media and religion provide ways of making sense of each other, ourselves and the universe. They both provide techniques of orientation and organization across space and time. The lecture explores some o the uncanny similarities between the oldest medium and one of the newest media. Google returns us, after the long audiovisual deviation of the twentieth-century, to the fundamental medium of writing, the mother of all media. Both God and Google claim to organize all the world’s knowledge and information whether in books or life or networked servers. What does it mean for the human prospect in 2010 that Google has become our central device for seeking and finding truth?
This talk is sponsored by the department of German and Russian Studies, Communication, English, and by the MU Lecture Committee.
When: March 5th, 3 PM
Location: Cornell Hall, Room 217
